LocalThunk originally conceived the game as a singleplayer adaptation of big two, inspired by watching Northernlion play Luck Be a Landlord. He deliberately avoided playing other deckbuilders like Slay the Spire until late in development to ensure he didn't borrow ideas, settling instead on the standard 52-card deck as his primary design tool. This choice reflects the game's core philosophy: using a universally understood system of rules and then breaking it with Jokers. The developer, who does not play poker himself, wanted to create a space where this shared language could be subverted for high scores without becoming a gambling simulator. The Standard Deck remains the silent partner in every victory, the unmodified canvas upon which the player paints their strategy before the Shop introduces chaos.

In Their Own Story

The run begins with a simple choice: select a deck or stick with the default. For many, the Standard Deck is the first obstacle they must overcome not through power, but through mastery of its limits. With only a limited number of hands and discards per round, the player draws from this pool of fifty-two cards to form poker hands. As rounds progress against Small Blinds, Big Blinds, and eventually Boss Blinds, the deck is slowly altered; cards are destroyed by Tarot effects or duplicated by Spectral forces. Yet, it always starts here. The tension mounts when the player holds a pair of Kings, needing just one more to secure the round's cash reward before the Showdown Blind appears in Ante 8. It is this mundane starting point that makes the eventual overflow to 'nan' in Endless Mode feel so surreal.

Reader's Guide

Every run starts with a standard 52-card deck consisting of four suits and thirteen ranks from Ace through King. You begin each round by drawing cards from this pool, selecting up to five to form poker hands like pairs or straights. Your score is calculated based on the hand's base value (Chips) multiplied by your current Mult. The Standard Deck has no special effects of its own; it simply provides the raw data for these calculations. You have a limited number of discards each round to replace up to five cards, forcing you to manage this finite resource carefully. As you progress through Antes 1 to 8, you can use Booster Packs from the Shop to add new cards or Tarot/Spectral cards to modify existing ones, but your journey always begins with these fifty-two unmodified cards.
